Food and Water Watch, Sierra Club Niagara Group and WNY Drilling Defense are sponsoring a Presentation by Chris Burger on the “Economics Myths of Fracking”:

What is this contest between the economic development of fracking and the environment?

Learn about the myths and hype being used by the gas industry and some politicians to convince us that environmental and health risks are worth the money to be made.

Chris Burger, a Co-Chair of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter’s Gas Task Force, is a college instructor who has degrees in Chemical Engineering, Economics and Social Psychology. His many activities in environmental issues include his being the Co-founder and Chair of the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition. He was a former Broome County Legislator and Chair of the Cornell University Eco-Justice Project.

This presentation is FREE and open to the public.

DEC extends comment period on SGEIS on Hydrofracking

On November 30, the DEC announced that it would extend the comment period on its Marcellus Shale draft SGEIS for an additional month until January 11, 2012. This decision came in response from numerous environmental organizations and others requesting more time to review the 1000+ page draft Environmental Impact Statement. The Sierra Club Niagara Group launched the site stopdrillinggoclean.org today, in an effort to encourage comments to the DEC on its flawed Environmental Impact Statement for hydrofracking. This site is being advertised on the local radio stations in Western New York. This site contains information on the serious dangers of hydrofracking, the negative economic impacts on local communities and real estate values, renewable energy alternatives, and how to directly comment to DEC on this matter. If you think all citizen’s water should be protected, take action today! Please share this link with others — we only have two weeks until comments are due for the DEC — December 12, 2011!

The DEC is holding two public comments sessions on the proposed drilling regulations this week: Wed. November 16, 2011 in Dansville, NY and Thurs. November 17, 2011 in Binghamton, NY. Both sessions have public comments scheduled between 1-4pm and 6-9pm. See the DEC website.

If you’re concerned about the potential serious life and health effects of hydrofracking and horizontal drilling for natural gas, then it is critical to contact the DEC concerning their proposed Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS). Public comments will be accepted through the close of business on December 12, 2011 by one of only two methods. Read the October Monthly Update for more information, including a document on the problems with the draft SGEIS. The Emerald Ash Borer is a non-native invasive insect that threatens all ash trees, and has already reeked havoc on millions of acres of forests in the Mid-West. Learn more about the insect and its potential impacts in Western New York. A multidisciplinary task force will be created to address this growing problem in our region.
