Sierrans – Let’s get outside after the winter and enjoy a walk and tour of Audubon’s Beaver Meadow Center, a 324 acre nature preserve in North Java, NY. We’ll also see the energy program and solar panels on their facility. The program will begin at 10:00AM and end at 12:00PM. (Please arrive at the Center no later than 9:45) There is a covered picnic shelter available for us to eat our BYO lunches. There is a $5.00 participation fee per person payable to the Beaver Meadow Audubon Center.

Statewide Renewable Energy Campaign Launch “Let’s Turn, Not Burn”

On Tuesday, April 16th at 10:00 am, there will be a press conference kicking off Renewable Energy Week aimed at telling Gov. Cuomo “Let’s Turn, Not Burn.” The conference will be held at the Buffalo waterfront at Dug’s Dive, 1111 Fuhrmann Boulevard, Buffalo, New York. It kicks off Sierra Club’s Renewable Energy Week, which includes events across the state and a robust advertising campaign in Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton, Auburn and Albany calling on Governor Cuomo to take administrative action to create jobs and grow the economy with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.

Speakers include:
Prof. Robert Howarth of Cornell University
Mayor Paul Dyster of Niagara Falls,
Bob Ciesielski Energy Committee Chair, Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter, and Niagara Group
Representative of Clean Air Coalition of Western New York

Prof. Robert Howarth has co-authored a recent paper with Mark Jacobson of Stanford University and Anthony Ingraffea of Cornell on how NYS could be powered by renewable energy completely (solar, wind and water power) by 2030. He also authored the study of how methane obtained from hydrofracking and horizontal drilling is a dirtier greenhouse gas than coal or oil emissions.

Annual Dinner

The Niagara Group Annual Awards Dinner is scheduled for Monday, May 6^th at the Eagle House Restaurant, 5578 Main St. Williamsville NY 14221. This is always a fun event where you are able to meet fellow Sierrans, Executive Committee members and award recipients. All are invited. Food is Dutch treat and the dinner choices are (tax and gratuity included):

Gorgonzola Garden Pasta – $19.

Roasted Turkey Dinner – $21

Sliced Beef Burgundy – $21

RecycleFest: April 27th

The Buffalo Recycling Alliance is a group of volunteers from Buffalo businesses and organizations that are working to increase Buffalo’s recycling rate through education, collaboration, and advocacy. Currently we are working to get 1,000 youth involved in recycling projects for Global Youth Service Day and the Community Carnival & RecycleFest we are having on April 27th from 12-2pm at Community Charter School. We are also working on collaborating with schools to create or enhance recycling programs.
